 Zesarnth's Weyr

The evening was drawing in and the Sun was setting behind the hills a short distance from the crystal clear lake that gave Lakeside its name.  I sat alone at my quarters’ writing desk, completing the day’s entry into my journal.  The evening Sun caused my dark-blonde hair to shine and I could feel the Sunlight falling on my back.
Suddenly, I shook my head as I heard the barking growl of the Hold’s watchwher from outside the unshuttered window.  Pushing back and rising from the chair, I walked to the window and looked out.  At first, I thought I was still daydreaming, but sooned realised I was fully conscious.  There was a green dragon landing in the main hold courtyard.  Some young children had been playing out, but quickly ran off as the dragon landed.  I saw the Lord Holder stride into the courtyard and approach the green’s rider.  Together, the two of them left in the direction of the Hold Hall.  I turned my attentions back to the dragon.  I had only ever seen a dragon up close once before - fighting Thread not far from the Hold.  It had been a lone brown, probably sent off by its wing leader to take out a stray patch of Threadfall.  It had landed and the rider had come to the hold to see if he could get his riding harness straps repaired.
Anyway, as I turned back to the green dragon I was startled to find it looking right at me.  I was hypnotised by the blue/green eyes.  The colour seemed to cycle in waves and I couldn’t stop staring.  I then became aware of a knocking on the door of my quarters.  Struggling to raw my attention away from the beautiful creature, lounging in the courtyard, I walked over to the door.  Opening it I found myself face-to-face with the dargonrider I had seen land only a few minutes ago.  Just behind him was Lemilf, the Lord Holder.  I invited them both in, but Lemilf chose to stay outside.  I pulled up a chair for the rider and we both sat down.

‘Hello’ I said.

‘Hello.  I believe you are Klerian, the Harper apprentice?  I am here from Aden Weyr.  I am on search for Candidates.  Green Rith has laid a clutch of 26, with one queen egg.  I think you are the one I’m after.’

‘Wow.’ I said. ‘Me, Searched? Are you sure?’

‘He is the one.’

The voice rang through my head with astounding clarity.  But who had spoken?  The rider hadn’t, I was sure of that.  Catching the surprised look on my face, the rider realised I didn’t know what was going on.

‘Oh.  Sorry you’ve never heard a dragon before? I didn’t know.  It can be quite a shock at first.  Anyway, I’ve discussed it with the Lord Holder and he has given permission for you to leave the Hold and come with me.  So, are you going to?’

‘Yeah.  I guess.’  I was still quite shaken after hearing the dragon’s voice.  ‘Yeah.  I’ll come.’

‘Good.  Well, if there’s anything important you want to pack, do it now.  You’ll get clothes and food at the Weyr.’

That was it then.  I gathered a few things, said goodbye to my parents and climbed aboard the dragon.  I think the Hold was sad to see me go.  I had been showing great promise with the runners, and people thought I had potential, despite failing at being a Harper.

I can still remember the harsh cold of between - something I’d never experienced before - and I honestly thought I was going to fall off and plummet to my death.  But, I didn’t and now I’m residing at Aden Weyr.
